In Southeast Asia, trees play a significant role in spirituality, but especially the Bodhi Tree or Ficus religiosa. Siddhartha Gautama, the spiritual teacher and founder of Buddhism, achieved spiritual enlightenment (or bodhi) while sitting under this variety of tree.
